I agree, I think it's the Sunburst Strat, although he was playing that funny-looking Alembic project in March.

As far as tone, I'd probably go with the Graham Nash Strat ("Alligator") or perhaps the Wolf. I don't think he ever achieved the same balance of raw power and buttery smoothness on his other instruments. On the other hand, it's hard to say how his earlier instruments (the SG for example) would have sounded through the more advanced sound systems they were using later on, though Bobby did play an SG (like Jerry's old guitar) for part of the Wall of Sound period.

I think it's pretty funny he was on a Strat, since this show is often referred to when folks are talking about Garcia's great "SG sound"...

He switched guitars a lot in this period, but was very consistent in sound... At least until after Keith joined; in '72 he seems to have a thinner tone, perhaps to blend in more with the piano.

Re: Alligator

That guitar was hardly a Strat anymore after the Alembic people had had their way with it. It was a real hodge-podge of a guitar that was being tinkered with all the time. They added new frets, a new bridge, a preamp, and all kinds of new electronics in that old '57 body, though the neck was apparently from a '62!

What I like about the Alligator is that it seems like the last guitar he played where he could still conjure up a real natural sounding clear tone, like in He's Gone, say.
